Business

Business – the way we make money. Whether dealing with large transnational corporations, or your neighborhood convenience store, accounting and tax policy can impact how your run your organization. As President Calvin Coolidge said, “chief business of the American people is business” — it is at the core of who we are as a nation as well as how we earn our livings.

For those that are 1099 Workers, most of the rules that apply to business tax matters also apply to you on your Schedule C filing. So while you think of yourself as a freelancer or contractor, you really are a self employed owner-operator and you will grow your practice if you think of yourself as one and plan accordingly.

We love covering tax and financial matters that apply broadly and generally to the business community, though we sometimes often geek out on more narrowly focused topics that are only of interest to a select industry.

Not every area of business is based on entrepreneurship, there are many areas that impact people that work in corporate jobs, both directly and indirectly. High earning individuals may earn their primarily income from a “day job” but invest in real estate to build wealth and create more income.

While a huge topic to cover, the area of business is of major interest to Americans of all income levels, backgrounds, races, and ethnicities. The American Dream is based on the idea of being able to own your own home, raise your family, and start your own small business.

Unpopular Opinion – Tax Refunds

By |2022-12-16T13:43:24-05:00September 2nd, 2021|Categories: Quickies with Bette|Tags: , , , , , |

Hi, Bette Hochberger or CPA, CGMA. And on today's Business Quickie, I'm going to tell you about an unpopular opinion that I have. So I know a lot of people really love getting tax refunds. There are all kinds of ads that say, "how to spend your refund, refund, refund, refund." People can't wait to get that refund check, but here's the big butt, why do I not like it? It's your money. You're not getting free money from the government. You're getting your own money back to you. So my unpopular opinion is don't create these huge tax refunds and don't think your CPA is amazing just because they get you a big tax refund.

By |2021-08-12T16:58:10-04:00August 12th, 2021|Categories: Other Perspectives|Tags: , , , , , |

Tomorrow is Friday the 13th, and considering the holiday's superstitious history, I wanted to share some tips from Twitter about avoiding bad luck with finances and taxes. This article is a different kind of Social Media Round-up, but I decided that there is no better day than Friday the 13th to try something new because if it flops, I will blame it on bad luck. I find this mindset funny because I think much of "bad luck" is actually just bad planning, and I hope this Twitter commentary can help us all avoid the pitfalls of poor finances and poor tax planning. Let's get started.

Work-Life Balance & Twitter

By |2021-06-11T20:46:32-04:00June 11th, 2021|Categories: Other Perspectives|Tags: , , , , , |

Work-Life Balance has generated quite a bit of buzz. It seems that the younger generation is throwing away the capitalistic mantra of “No Days Off!” and recycling it into "PLEASE, take days off for your health. As a member of Gen-Z, I agree that self-care should come first, not your job. However, I also recognize that self-care should not be an excuse for underdelivering at said job. I figured I would look at what Twitter is saying about Work-Life Balance and share it with you for this week's social media round-up.

Being a Woman in Finance

By |2021-06-08T13:49:26-04:00June 7th, 2021|Categories: Quickies with Bette|Tags: , , , |

Hi, I'm Bette Hochberger, CPA, CGMA. And on today's Business Quickie, I'm going to talk about my experience as a woman in finance. If you watch one of my other videos, I talk about my educational background. I went to engineering school, and there are more men in engineering than women. That's just kind of how it goes. I've always liked math. So that's always pointed me in a direction that would be in a more male-dominated field.
