Hi! I’m Bette Hochberger, CPA, CGMA. Moved to Florida? Well, congratulations on your move to the Sunshine State! Whether you’ve relocated for the beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, or favorable tax climate, settling into your new life in Florida can be an exciting adventure.
However, transitioning to a new state involves more than just unpacking boxes. In today’s blog, I’ll provide you with a post-move checklist for new residents to help you navigate the essentials and make the most of your Florida experience.
Post-Move Checklist for New Florida Residents
Update Your Address
Begin by updating your address with the United States Postal Service (USPS), as well as with any relevant institutions such as banks, insurance providers, and utility companies. You can do this online or by visiting your local post office.
Register Your Vehicle
If you’ve brought a vehicle with you to Florida, you’ll need to register it with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) within 10 days of establishing residency. Be prepared to provide proof of ownership, insurance, and a valid Florida driver’s license.
Obtain a Florida Driver’s License
Speaking of driver’s licenses, you’ll need to obtain a Florida driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency. Visit your local DHSMV office with proof of identification, proof of Social Security Number, and proof of residency to complete the process.
Exercise your civic duty by registering to vote in your new Florida county. You can register online through the Florida Division of Elections website or by completing a voter registration application and submitting it to your county’s Supervisor of Elections office.
Set Up Utilities
Contact local utility providers to establish service for electricity, water, gas (if applicable), internet, and cable. Be sure to inquire about any specific requirements or options available in your area.
Explore Healthcare Options
Familiarize yourself with healthcare providers in your area and consider enrolling in a health insurance plan if you haven’t already done so. Florida offers a variety of healthcare options, including private insurance plans and government-sponsored programs like Medicaid.
Familiarize Yourself with Local Services
Take the time to familiarize yourself with local services such as grocery stores, healthcare facilities, schools, libraries, and recreational amenities. Exploring your new community will help you feel more at home and connected to your surroundings.
Update Legal Documents
Review and update important legal documents such as your will, trust, and power of attorney to reflect your new Florida residency. Consider consulting with an attorney familiar with Florida law to ensure your documents comply with state regulations.
Prepare for Hurricanes
Living in Florida means being prepared for hurricane season. Stock up on emergency supplies, develop a family emergency plan, and familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and local emergency shelters.
Enjoy Your New Environment!
Finally, take some time to embrace all that Florida has to offer! Whether it’s exploring the natural beauty of the Everglades, soaking up the sun on the beaches, or indulging in the state’s diverse culinary scene, make the most of your new Florida lifestyle.
Moving here opens up a world of opportunities and experiences. By following this post-move checklist and taking the time to settle into your new surroundings, you’ll be well on your way to making this state feel like home.
